Let’s face it – people are addicted to their phones.

You see people “playing” with their phones everywhere.  At the doctor’s office, in line at the bank, at the park, in the movie theater…the list goes on and on.  Those that are on their phone the most have internet access, so they are looking up everything from directions to the nearest drug store to drop off a prescription.

One of the “cool” things about mobile marketing is that it reaches the customer instantly and they can check out a business website before they even step in to the store.  Many more people are educating themselves before doing business with someone to see what their reputation is.  The fact of the matter is though, when people are using the internet on their smart phones, they are really only looking at the first two pages of Google (or other search engines).  In this fast paced immediate gratification world we live in, there’s no time to search through all the choices.

The trouble is, it can be somewhat “difficult” to get on the first page of Google (or other search engines) for free.  Organic search as it is called, is the natural listings that come up when you type in a keyword or phrase.  There are of course paid advertisements but they are costly and it’s hard to recoup those costs depending on the business.

Now more than ever,  local businesses are realizing the importance of the internet.  Whether they have a website or not, they realize that their old ad in the Yellow Pages isn’t working any more.  Honestly, every year when they bring me a book I tell them to take it back – I don’t need it.  Everything I need or want is online.  And in my opinion, if they aren’t online then it makes me wonder how legitimate they are.  While that may be a harsh judgement, I guarantee I’m not the only one that thinks that way.
