The Return Investment on a Compliment

You know that old saying you can catch more bees with honey?

Well, it’s true!

An honest and timely compliment will get you anywhere…

This weekend, my oldest daughter and I went to Ulta to use a Bare Escentuals coupon from my House Party a couple of weeks ago.  We went straight to the Bare Escentuals section – I didn’t want to get side tracked.  We were on a mission to get some Purifying Cleanser from their new Bare Minerals Skincare line.

There was a very nice young lady working the are and she asked if I needed help and I said no, I had found what I needed.  I was only going for the new cleanser because I have so many products from Bare Minerals that I didn’t think I needed anything else.  The only thing I don’t use is the foundation because I haven’t found a color I really liked.

My daughter ran around the corner, so I was forced to go to the other section where I saw a huge array of different foundation colors and finishes.  I had not been to Ulta in a very long time!

I was immediately drawn to a new color – Fairly Medium.  When I asked the girl about it, she said that I was too fair and I would see the color line between my face and my neck (which I despise).  But, I explained to her that I was really unhappy with my other foundation colors and coverage so I had stopped using the foundation.

To make a long story short, she picked the color she thought I should get and I got the Fairly Medium.  She offered to do a test to see which one was better.

So I sat in the chair and she took off my makeup.  In the meantime my daughter sat on the other side and played with the mirror and pretended to put on makeup too.

As the young lady took off my makeup she said, “Wow, you have really beautiful skin!  Make sure you take care of it so you don’t have premature aging in your thirties.”

I smiled really big and asked her how old she thought I was, she said 27.  I laughed and she quickly told me not to tell her my age because she didn’t want to know.

Needless to say, she got the sale.  :)

But the whole weekend I was on kind of a high from that compliment.  I’ve been frustrated with myself with my gray hairs, the extra weight I really should work on taking off so I can keep up with my kids, my arms, etc.

You know how we women get!

So that compliment came at a really great time.  I’ve told numerous people about the experience and even shared it on Facebook.  Is that a little self-serving?

Maybe…

But it really made me feel good for a while and really, isn’t that what a compliment is supposed to do?

P.S. I bet some of you are wondering how old I am.  Well, this year I will turn…40.

Ugh!

Get ready for some interesting posts around my birthday in September!

Oh and yes, I did get my new foundation in Fairly Medium.  It’s finally the perfect color for me!

My Secret to a Good Night’s Sleep

As a mama with two toddlers, sleep is a commodity.

Truth be told, I go to bed much later than I should.  Mostly because my hubby and I want some quiet time without the kids, to watch something on TV and talk about the day.  (The minute he walks in the door from work it’s all about the kids.)

So, I really treasure my sleep.  I would rather sleep in than go out for breakfast.  The ironic thing is the rare instances I do get to sleep in, I can’t.

But one of the keys to helping me get a really good night’s rest is a firm pillow.  I need a new pillow about every 6 months or so.  Right now my pillow is flimsy and flat, so I’ve been tossing and turning because I can’t get comfortable.  :(

So, I’m on the hunt for a new pillow again and I’m picky.  And before you ask, yes I’m one of “those” people that flips their pillow in the summer to get the cool side. I had seen a special pillow from Homedics with cooling technology, but I didn’t see it on their website when I visited today.  With my luck, it’s probably discontinued…

I’ve always purchased the extra firm pillows but the problem is they don’t stay firm.  I’m allergic to the down pillows too, so those are out.

I’m a challenge, aren’t I?

So, while I shop for a pillow and small appliances, I will have to double up.  Two flat pillows = 1 semi-firm pillow…I hope!

How about you? Do you have any bed time rituals or “must haves” to help you get a good night’s sleep?  Or can you sleep any where, any time?

I Think I’ve “Officially” Become Boring…

OK, maybe boring may be too harsh of a word.  Let’s try practical…

Recently, I won a member of the year award for one of the organizations I’m in.  It was a very nice and unexpected award because I didn’t know it existed and I wasn’t even a member the whole year.

However, when the very nice plaque was presented to me, all I could think of was, “I would have rather had a $20 gift certificate to Target or something.”  Or whatever the plaque cost…

Not to say I wasn’t appreciative or anything.  Quite the contrary!  It made me want to work even harder.

But what am I going to do with that plaque?  I work from home, so no one is going to see it except my family.  I honestly would have rather purchased something nice for myself or even some toilet paper.

So I don’t know if this makes me boring or practical, but either way I find it a little sad.

Like “really, I want toilet paper more than I want a plaque?”  YUP!  Have you seen the price of toilet paper these days??

So which is it?  Boring? Practical? Or just a mom?

March Has Been an Expensive Appliance Month

March has been quite an expensive month – each week I have had to replace a small appliance.

Week 1 – my hair dryer

Week 2 – my flat iron (see my awful shopping experience at A Bad Customer Service Day)

Week 3 (yesterday as a matter of fact) my blender

…sigh…

I have been on a roll – an expensive one at that!  Seriously, how does someone have this many small appliance issues in one month?

I guess it was just great timing.  The hair dryer was about 6 months old (which is the average life for me), my flat iron was about 3 months old but I got it for like $12 because I didn’t want to spend a lot of money if I wasn’t going to use it, and my blender was at least 10 years old (although we’ve rarely used it until recently.)

So now I need to shop for a new blender, although I think I’d prefer a Magic Bullet or Ninja Blender.  Do you own one?  What do you think?  My parents had a Magic Bullet and loved it, but it seems so small.  They are both around $50 so I am just wondering which is better and why.  So if you have an opinion, please let me know.  I’ll have to get a new one this weekend.

Until then, I have to use a hand shaker to make my protein shakes.  YUCK!

Does anyone know of any reviews/giveaways on the Magic Bullet or Ninja?  I’d love to see the post (and enter of course!)  :)

Effective Immediately: New Rule in Our House

I implemented a new rule in our house this weekend:

If you run out of something, stop and refill it immediately.  That way we can be assured we actually have the “stuff”!!

Let me explain…

This weekend I had two minor toiletry emergencies.  On Saturday, we ran out of toilet paper.  Seriously, not one square left anywhere.  Sure I could use wet wipes or a paper towel in an emergency, but still.  I hadn’t taken a shower and I was a good 2 hours (at least) from leaving the house.

Then on  Sunday, we ran out of diapers for my oldest.  Again, not ready to “run out” and get more so I had to use an overnight diaper instead.

While neither one of these were life-threatening instances, they really threw a wrench in my day.  The looming feeling of having to rush to go get something because you’re completely out of it is daunting.  I would have much rather gone to the store at midnight the day before than to run out.

What kind of rules do you have in the house that help you run your household?  Who else has run out of toilet paper or diapers?  Surely I can’t be the only one!  :)

The Nightmare that is Bamboopink

WARNING: Extreme rant ahead!

Seriously, I didn’t even know where to start this post.  I am so fed up and frustrated that I can’t even see straight.  This is just completely out of hand.

For those who many not have heard about Bamboopink yet, they are an “upcoming” direct marketing company that will sell fashion jewelry designed by JudeFrances Jewelry.  They are in pre-launch right now and are offering the “business opportunity” FREE.  The mere fact that they have made a free business opportunity brings out the worst in people.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have received emails, blog comments and Facebook requests from Bamboopink “consultants” that want me to join their team and earn lots of money.

A summary of most of the emails and comments I get:

“Get in on the ground floor opportunity!  It’s free to get started and you can earn a ton of money!  This is the perfect way to work from home and raise your kids. ”  blah, blah, blah

There are so many things wrong with this I have to make a list:

  1. Any time you send an unsolicited email to someone you don’t know, it’s SPAM.  This is a FEDERAL OFFENSE as outlined on the FCC website.  For details go to http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/canspam.html.  These “consultants” claim that they didn’t know what they were doing was SPAM and they were just trying to “help” me earn money. Seriously, give me a break. They knew it was wrong and just thought that the offer to join a company on the ground floor would be too good to resist and people wouldn’t mind.
  2. There is no product available to buy right now, no one has done a home show and no one is making money.  So how can they “claim” I’ll make a lot of money?  They haven’t made any money yet!
  3. This type of communication is what gives those of us in a legitimate direct sales business, a bad name. This is exactly the type of behavior people complain about and make them not want to even buy from a direct sales company much less become a consultant.

I have seen the Bamboopink consultants blast their “opportunity” all over Twitter, social networks, CafeMom, etc.  It’s upsetting to me because they are ruining the Bamboopink name and direct sales profession.

For all I know, Bamboopink could be an absolutely wonderful high fashion jewelry company with fabulous merchandise that I can’t help but want to buy.  However, I have a negative image of the company because they are allowing their future sales force to act in an unprofessional manner.  I find it hard to believe that a company in pre-launch would encourage their sales force to spam the opportunity all over the place.

Plus, this appears to be one of the work at home scams so many people are afraid of because it’s all hype and no substance.  There is no product to buy yet and the website does not detail when they will get started.  How do the consultants even know if there will be a good product to sell (one that they will be proud to represent), good fulfillment and good customer/consultant service?  All these are critical to a consultant’s success and happy customers.

There are so many companies that have paved the way and set the high standards for ethical direct sales businesses:  Mary Kay, Pampered Chef and Stampin’ Up! just to name a few.  This type of behavior just puts a black mark on our industry and there doesn’t need to be.  Unfortunately, we’re lumped together with all direct marketing businesses whether they are an official member of the Direct Selling Association or not.

The bottom line is that the only way to build a successful business – any kind of business – is to have a great product and deliver it with great customer service.  Those of us that choose to build a direct sales business and sponsor consultants to build a downline need to do it with integrity.  We have to be more interested in the other person’s goals than our own, we need to build relationships and we need to help people achieve their goals.  We need to be good examples so that our team will model our behavior.  We need to have integrity.

If you have been spamming your opportunity all over the internet, please stop.  You’re hurting your reputation and the reputation of the company you’re representing.  You’re giving the direct marketing profession a bad name.  You’re only making it harder for yourselves (and the rest of us) to do business.

Bad seeds exist in every company.  I am sure there are many wonderful future Bamboopink consultants who are starting their business the right way by building relationships and offering the potential opportunity.  But these actions have made it harder to find the diamonds in the rough.

To make it clear, I don’t have a problem with consultants that are sharing the opportunity in a “new” post within the social networks to let others know of the business and allow them to make a decision on their own.  My “complaint” is with those consultants who reply to people who are looking for a work at home opportunity about Bamboopink and make hyped up claims about a company that hasn’t even launched yet.  And of course the consultants who spam blogs, contact form and emails.

I thought it was almost laughable that a direct quote from Bamboopink’s website says, “Since word got out that we were launching Bamboopink, it has become one of the most anticipated and talked about direct market jewelry company in recent times.” Unfortunately, the “word” is negative from my perspective.

I’m not alone.  Many of us have been talking about this epidemic on Twitter and I invite you to read Shelly’s post on her Work At Home Business Options website.  She was more PC than I was with her first post, she didn’t name any names.  But we all knew what company she was talking about.

OK, so I am sure I have ruffled a few feathers.  What do you think?  Have you heard of Bamboopink before this post?  Have you been spammed with the opportunity?  Post your comments below!

A Bad Customer Service Day

I don’t get out of the house by myself all that often.  As a work at home mom, I have a very structured day which includes working with the kids are napping or otherwise occupied for at least 15 minutes at a time.

Last night happened to be one of those rare occasions that I was out all by myself.  I had a dinner meeting and needed to run a few errands before and after that meeting.  The whole night was a disaster.

First, I stopped by Sally’s Beauty Supply store to get a new flat iron (by other one konked out earlier this week).  Walking in the store, I should have known it wouldn’t have been a good experience.

The store was hotter than hell.  I know that’s a very colorful description but seriously, the sun was blaring directly into the store.  The glare was so bad I couldn’t read the packages on the boxes.  I actually had to go to the back of the store to read the different features and benefits to pick the best flat iron.  When I finally picked one out, I went to go stand in line.

The store is tiny and 5 people in line was a mob.  There was one cashier and the other person left for lunch.  There was someone with a return and someone who had been over charged for their purchase.  The wait in line, with the sun beating down on us was bad.

We were sweating.  People were getting irritated.  It wasn’t a pretty site in a “beauty” store.  People were leaving – they just put down their purchases and left.  Unfortunately I didn’t have that luxury because I needed the flat iron.

When I finally got to the cashier to ring up my purchase, she was rushing to get the line down.  Understandable, but when I asked what the warranty was, she didn’t know for sure.  But, she mentioned I could have purchased a one year warranty — after she completed the transaction.

I’ve been a large appliance manager and part  of the sale process is to offer the extended warranty option before the transaction is finished.  Long story short I wanted the extended warranty so she had to void the purchase, I had to sign the void and then she had to re-ring the purchase.

Ugh!

I was running late for my dinner meeting after the Sally’s fiasco and I got to the restaurant just in time.  We had chosen Red Lobster because it was quiet and we could talk and have dinner at the same time.  In general Red Lobster is a “nice” restaurant and one of the pricier options compared to fast food.  However, I was looking forward to a good meal that I could eat in peace.

We had bad service from our waiter.   He didn’t pay attention, he had no personality, he didn’t smile and he acted like we were a nuisance.

Ugh, he ruined our meal and my rare night out!

News flash…

In this tough economy, people are very careful about how they spend their money.

  • If you don’t provide good service, people will leave.
  • If you make it hard for customers to buy from you, they won’t.
  • If you don’t show customers you care and are thankful for them shopping with you, they will find someone else who will.

Regardless of what kind of business you have, whether you work for a company, started your own business from scratch or you are a direct sales consultant, customers are the key to your success.  The customer experience is so important to your business – especially repeat business.

The worst part about my bad customer service experiences?  I called the managers today to let them know and they weren’t interested.  They were only half apologetic because they knew it was the “right” thing to do.

Unacceptable.

It’s Time for a Change

Spring is in the air and that always means change…

  • Change in the weather (yay!)
  • Spring cleaning: out with the old and in with the new
  • Financial changes (thanks to Uncle Sam and the U.S. taxes)

…and personal change.

I always get this overwhelming need to make drastic changes in my life during the Spring.  This was only fueled by the fact that I have two Spring beauties born in April and May :) .

This season, part of my changes include this blog.  For a while now, I have felt that Work at Home Mom, Busy and Happy Mom wasn’t my “happy place” anymore.  I love the layout and the design, but I’m not “loving” the  initial niche I had planned.  Originally, this blog was supposed to be a resource for other who want to find legitimate work at home opportunities.

While I am still VERY committed to helping people find a work at home opportunity that suits them and their family, I am so much more than that now.  Plus, there are tons of websites doing the same thing and I really only want to bring fresh and new ideas that not many people know about.

Those opportunities are few and far between.

So I’m going to be expanding this blog to include my every day life with my kids, working my home based businesses with my kids and just more personal “stuff”.  And, I’m somewhat “lazy” and pressed for time like all moms, and really don’t want to start yet another blog so I’m just going to make the change here.  I need to do this for myself because I need a creative outlet to share all the ideas in my head.

Plus, I really want to do this for you.

I often feel like I am “the only one” experiencing things in my life and I feel secluded, alone and sometimes scared.  When I finally share what’s going on with a girl friend or a new mom I just met at the play area I realize, it’s not just me.  And that is so comforting.  So I’m hoping to provide that comfort or reassurance for you too.

Do I have all the answers?  Absolutely not!

And that’s OK.

All I really want to do is share what’s going on with me, my kids and my businesses and see what you think.  Maybe someone will be able to make a suggestion to help me figure something out.  Now wouldn’t that be wonderful!

So, effective immediately, you’ll start seeing some changes to my blog posts.  And in the near future, a major face lift to my blog design to reflect the changes.  I still love the colors and my header, so those will probably stay the same.

Who knows.  :D

Thanks for being on this journey with me, I hope to get to know you all much better in the very near future!

My Biggest Blogging Challenge for 2011

I have thought long and hard about my biggest blogging challenge.  It’s actually been weighing on  my mind for quite a while because quite frankly I haven’t kept up with it as much as I’d like.

I am so interested in blogging and meeting new people that I love the concept.  I love it so much that I offer it as a service in my virtual assistance business and it has been going great.  So great though that my blog takes a back seat to my clients. I have wanted to attend the Blogging Success Summit for some time now, and when I saw the opportunity to win tickets, I knew I had to jump at the chance.

One of the ways to enter the contest is to blog about your biggest blogging challenge.  It’s  a brilliant concept because now I have to blog to enter!  :)

So, here it is, my biggest blogging challenge for 2011 (and beyond)…

Finding the time to blog for myself!

I have no challenges coming up with topics, I have a notebook full of them.  I even have some outlines done and keywords listed and everything.  The challenge is really finding the time to input them in the system and create a schedule to blog regularly.

One of the things I have done already is purchased the Dragon Naturally Speaking software so that I can talk about all my blog post ideas, and the software will transcribe my voice.  Then, I can just print that document, edit it and presto – instant blog post!  I think this will help tremendously because typing takes longer than speaking.

I actually recommended this to one of my colleagues at The Virtual Difference and she said it works wonderfully.  Diane, the owner of TVD is busier than anyone I know, but she also accomplishes more than anyone I know.  So if it works for her, it has to work for me.  I’m glad she tried it out because I wasn’t sure if my idea would work.  Now I know it does!

So there it is, my biggest blogging challenge.  It weighs on my mind constantly when I let a week or two go by without blogging, so I need to get over this hump and move forward.  Hopefully winning a ticket to the Blogging Success Summit will help!  If you have blogging challenges or want to learn more about blogging, I suggest you head over to the BSS website and get more info.  It’s going to be a huge online virtual event!  Definitely not one to be missed!

I think attending the Blogging Success Summit will help my blogging, but it will also help me improve my services to my clients.  This is really a win-win opportunity!
